Hello and welcome to the working week.

In a world swinging from free trade to mercantilism, the annual gathering of political and⁣ business leaders in Davos ⁣this ‌week will make for interesting ⁤watching, and watch it we must as⁢ some of ⁤the most powerful people in the ‌world descend on the Alpine retreat.

US President Donald Trump will be arriving in force⁤ – the largest ever American delegation by some estimates⁤ – and he’ll be joined by his ⁢Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelenskyy,⁣ France’s Emmanuel Macron, UK chancellor Rachel Reeves, Germany’s⁣ Friedrich Merz among others. It’s ⁢a recipe for something to happen, perhaps (hopefully) ⁤some critically important progress on that long-sought Ukraine deal or maybe more talk about the ⁢eastern‍ European country’s accession to the EU. Will it mean anything to ⁢Trump that this week marks⁤ a year of his return to the Oval Office?‌ He would there’s no doubt whatsoever like an anniversary gift. Greenland perhaps?

Japan’s⁢ electorate⁣ is set to get‍ some crucial news: a snap election ⁢ date. Current thinking is that Prime‌ Minister Sanae Takaichi will make a public ⁣statement on Monday ahead of a⁤ dissolution⁤ of the lower house of parliament⁣ on Friday. The general election will then be called either for February 8 or 15, according to ⁢local media.

Approval ratings for Takaichi’s Liberal⁤ Democratic Party have been ⁤low. But she has been seen as a refreshing change for Japanese politics, notably by younger voters who have been drawn to smaller, populist parties. This is a‌ big gamble for the ⁢new PM.

In⁤ the UK, the long-running saga over whether to allow China to build a mega embassy in London is due ⁤to at‌ last be decided as the deadline ⁢for a ruling on ⁤the planning application arrives on Tuesday, wiht the plans widely⁢ expected ⁢to be approved.

The markets will‌ start the ⁣week more quietly than usual as Wall Street takes a break for Martin‌ Luther King⁢ jr Day . However, they will make up for lost time from Tuesday as earnings season rolls⁢ along, including earnings from Netflix, expected to Wednesday

The Wapping printers’ strike began on February 6, 1986, when⁢ approximately 6,000 print workers⁢ initiated industrial ‍action against News International, owned⁣ by Rupert Murdoch. The dispute stemmed from News international’s decision to‌ relocate newspaper production from ‌Fleet⁢ Street in‍ London ⁢to a new facility in ⁤Wapping, East London.
