The U.S. Military launched a strike on a boat accused of ferrying drugs in the eastern Pacific Ocean on Friday, killing two people, according to U.S. Southern Command.

The strike is part of an ongoing campaign by the Trump administration targeting vessels suspected of involvement in drug trafficking in Latin American waters, which has persisted since early September 2025 and has resulted in at least 183 deaths in total.

U.S. Southern Command stated that no U.S. Military forces were harmed in the operation and shared a video on social media showing the boat before and after the strike, which left it in flames.

The military said it targeted the alleged drug traffickers along known smuggling routes in the eastern Pacific Ocean, continuing a pattern of similar strikes that have also occurred in the Caribbean Sea.

The Trump administration has described the campaign as part of an “armed conflict” with cartels in Latin America, arguing that the strikes are necessary to stem the flow of illicit drugs into the United States.

However, the military has not provided public evidence that any of the vessels struck were actually carrying drugs, and critics have questioned the legality and justification of the attacks.

The campaign began as the U.S. Expanded its military presence in the region to levels not seen in generations and preceded a January 2026 raid that captured then-Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who was brought to New York to face drug trafficking charges and has pleaded not guilty.

Other strikes under the operation, known as Operation Southern Spear, have taken place in the Caribbean Sea, with the campaign expanding to the eastern Pacific Ocean in October 2025.

As of the latest strike, the total number of people killed in the campaign stands at at least 183, including four individuals who are missing and presumed dead, according to military reports.

U.S. Officials have not disclosed details about the identity of those killed in the Friday strike or provided information on whether any suspects were captured or extradited in this specific operation.

The Pentagon and U.S. Southern Command have maintained that the strikes are conducted in accordance with international law and U.S. Military rules of engagement, though independent verification of these claims remains limited.
