The United Kingdom government awarded a three-year contract valued at 879 million pounds ($1.19 billion) to Boeing on April 15, 2026, to provide maintenance and support for military helicopter fleets.

The agreement covers the support of Apache attack helicopters operated by the British Army and Chinook heavy-lift helicopters operated by the Royal Air Force.

Contract Scope and Financials

The contract is designed to ensure the continued operational readiness of two primary rotorcraft platforms used by the UK military. The financial terms of the deal are set at 879 million pounds, which converts to approximately $1.19 billion based on the exchange rate of $1 to 0.7384 pounds.

Boeing will be responsible for the maintenance and support of these aircraft over the next three years.

Context of UK Heavy-Lift Capabilities

This maintenance agreement follows previous efforts by the UK Ministry of Defence to expand its strategic mobility. On March 14, 2024, the government confirmed the purchase of 14 extended-range Chinooks (CH47-ER) to bolster heavy-lift capabilities.

The CH47-ER variant provides double the range of standard Chinooks and includes capabilities for air-to-air refuelling. These aircraft are capable of transporting up to 10,000 kg of cargo or 55 personnel, with a top speed of 300 kilometres per hour.

The 2024 procurement program included a modernised airframe and an advanced digital cockpit to increase the stability and survivability of the fleet in environments ranging from arctic to desert conditions.

Economic and Procurement Impact

The broader investment in the Chinook fleet has had specific economic implications for the UK. The March 14, 2024, announcement regarding the 14 extended-range helicopters estimated an additional £151 million of investment into the UK economy, with UK companies producing components critical for the manufacturing and maintenance of the aircraft.

the Ministry of Defence’s procurement arm, Defence Equipment & Support, negotiated with the US Government to reduce costs for elements of that specific programme by more than £300 million.
