Ukraine’s dobrobat: Rebuilding lives After Russian Strikes
The Devastation in Markhalivka
On May 24th, the quiet community of Markhalivka, southeast of Kyiv, was struck by a barrage of Iranian Shahed drones adn Russian ballistic missiles. The attack left a trail of destruction, shattering homes and leaving residents in shock.
Victor Vlasenko, a resident of Markhalivka, recounted the harrowing experience: “We were struck by two Iranian Shahed drones and two Russian ballistic missiles. We are extremely lucky to be alive because they struck so close, but fortunately, none of the shrapnel or glass hit us.”
The attack resulted in civilian casualties, wiht at least one death and numerous injuries reported. The scale of the damage was promptly apparent, with debris scattered throughout the neighborhood.
Dobrobat: A Beacon of Hope
Amidst the devastation, a remarkable effort is underway. Volunteers from dobrobat, one of ukraine’s largest volunteer reconstruction battalions, are working tirelessly to rebuild homes and restore hope to affected communities.
Mykhailo Bryzhko, Dobrobat’s head of regional advancement, explained the scope of the damage: “Right here, one of the Russian ballistic missiles struck, and right next to it, a Shahed drone hit this home.Another drone hit behind this building, and another missile struck right here. These are civilian infrastructures; ordinary people live here. Sadly, a man died in this building, and many were wounded.”
At Victor Vlasenko’s home, volunteers are prioritizing roof repairs to prevent further damage from the elements. “As you can see,the house was destroyed, and our first step is to rebuild the roof so that it’s not leaking and not flooding the rest of the house,” Bryzhko stated.
Dobrobat’s Mission and Impact
Dobrobat was founded shortly after Russia’s full-scale invasion of ukraine in 2022. As then, the organization has mobilized over 52,000 volunteers to assist in reconstruction efforts.
The organization’s work extends across fourteen regions of Ukraine, providing vital support to families struggling to rebuild their lives. The financial burden of reconstruction is significant, and Dobrobat’s assistance is often life-changing for those affected.
Victor Vlasenko expressed his gratitude: “I want to give my great thanks to these volunteers who are helping rebuild my home. It would be extremely tough without them managing the scale of the financial costs to fix our place.”
