Ukraine has escalated long-range strikes deep into Russian territory, deploying drones capable of reaching over 2,000 kilometers, marking the first confirmed use of such weapons in the war, according to Ukrainian officials and Western military analysts. The move comes as G7 leaders reaffirmed their support for Kyiv’s defense capabilities during a summit in Italy, where they pledged additional military aid packages.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the shift in strategy on June 21, stating that Ukraine was "returning the war to Russia" by targeting critical infrastructure, military depots, and command centers beyond the front lines. "We are striking where it hurts most—deep inside their territory," Zelenskyy said in a recorded address, adding that the drones had already hit energy grids and logistics hubs in southern Russia, including the Krasnodar region.

The new capability extends Ukraine’s operational reach beyond its existing arsenal of HIMARS and Storm Shadow missiles, which typically operate at ranges of 70–250 kilometers. The drones, developed in collaboration with Western partners, are believed to be modified versions of commercial platforms repurposed for precision strikes, according to a report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW). The ISW noted that Russia had previously warned of such threats but had not yet confirmed direct losses from the strikes.

G7 leaders, meeting in Apulia, Italy, on June 20–21, issued a joint statement condemning Russia’s "unprovoked aggression" and reaffirming their commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty. The statement included a pledge to accelerate the delivery of advanced air defense systems, including Patriot and NASAMS batteries, as well as additional ammunition for artillery and drones. U.S. President Joe Biden, speaking at the summit, emphasized that the G7’s support was "not just about weapons—it’s about breaking Russia’s ability to sustain this war."

Russian officials have not yet provided a detailed response to the strikes, though the Kremlin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, dismissed the claims as "provocative" and reiterated Moscow’s stance that Ukraine was "losing the war." However, satellite imagery analyzed by BBC Monitoring and Reuters shows damage consistent with drone strikes in areas near the Black Sea coast, including the port city of Novorossiysk, a key node for Russia’s military supply routes.

The escalation raises concerns about a broader regional conflict. Turkey, which maintains a neutral stance but has deep economic ties with Russia, has called for an immediate ceasefire, warning that the strikes could destabilize the Black Sea grain export corridor. Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg stated that the alliance was monitoring the situation closely but had no plans to expand its direct involvement beyond existing support for Ukraine.

Ukraine’s defense industry has accelerated production of long-range drones in recent months, with reports indicating that at least three new models are in testing phases. The Kyiv Independent cited unnamed military sources as saying that Ukraine aimed to deploy 50 such drones per month by mid-2026, though logistical challenges remain. Analysts warn that Russia’s air defenses, particularly the S-400 systems deployed near the front, may limit the effectiveness of the strikes unless Ukraine can develop electronic countermeasures.

The G7’s response includes a focus on bolstering Ukraine’s cyber defenses, as Russian hacking groups have increasingly targeted energy grids and government networks. A classified briefing obtained by The Wall Street Journal suggested that Moscow had launched at least 12 major cyberattacks against Ukrainian infrastructure since May, though no major outages have been confirmed.

For now, the strikes appear to be a tactical shift rather than a strategic turning point. Ukrainian officials have framed the campaign as a way to force Russia to divert resources from the front lines, while Western allies emphasize that the aid packages will help Kyiv maintain its defensive posture. The next phase of the conflict will likely hinge on whether Russia can adapt its air defenses or whether Ukraine can sustain the production and deployment of its new long-range capabilities.
