A federal jury in Seattle has found Boeing not liable in a lawsuit brought by LOT Polish Airlines concerning the grounding of the 737 MAX aircraft fleet. The verdict, delivered on May 22, 2026, concludes a legal challenge regarding revenue losses sustained by the airline during the 20-month suspension of the aircraft’s operations.
LOT Polish Airlines had sought $250 million in damages from the American aerospace manufacturer. The airline’s legal complaint alleged that Boeing had engaged in fraud, claiming the company’s actions led to significant financial losses through
“misleading statements and deliberate and negligent omissions and misrepresentations regarding the 737 MAX”
according to court documents.
The 737 MAX Grounding and Safety History
The litigation stemmed from the worldwide grounding of all 737 MAX aircraft, which was ordered by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This suspension lasted from March 2019 until November 2020.

The FAA’s decision to ground the fleet followed two separate fatal aviation disasters involving the 737 MAX 8 model. The first crash involved a Lion Air aircraft on October 29, 2018, and the second involved an Ethiopian Airlines aircraft on March 10, 2019. A total of 346 people lost their lives in the two accidents.
In 2019, Boeing admitted that a specific anti-stall software component had contributed to the accidents. This admission followed the investigations into the technical failures that led to the crashes and the subsequent regulatory response.
Reactions to the Verdict
Following the jury’s decision in the Seattle federal court, Boeing expressed satisfaction with the outcome. In a statement addressed to AFP, a Boeing spokesperson said,
“We are pleased with the jury verdict in our favor”

LOT Polish Airlines, which was the first airline to take legal action against the manufacturer regarding the 737 MAX issues, indicated that it was
“taking note”
of the judgment. The airline also stated that it would study available options for pursuing further legal steps in the matter.
