The Telegraph’s three-part podcast series has revealed the double life of Jan Marsalek, the Austrian tech boss and former Wirecard COO who is believed to have been the mastermind behind a Russian spy ring operating in the UK.
Marsalek, now one of Interpol’s most wanted men, fled Austria in 2020 following the collapse of Wirecard amid a massive fraud scandal. Despite international efforts to locate him, his precise whereabouts remain uncertain.
The podcast series, hosted by Special Correspondent Hayley Dixon, explores how Marsalek allegedly ran operations on behalf of the Kremlin during his time at Wirecard, including assembling a Libyan militia, conducting surveillance on enemies of the state, and plotting to hijack the Austrian spy service.
His alleged handler was met during a meeting on a yacht in Nice in 2014, marking the beginning of his double life as a Russian spy while maintaining his position as a prominent tech executive.
The investigation also uncovered a UK-based spy ring of Bulgarian nationals who were found guilty of espionage at the Old Bailey after a three-month trial. For nearly three years, they had been spying for Russia before their arrest.
Orlin Roussev, who admitted to being the ringleader of the UK-based spy ring, compared himself to the James Bond character ‘Q’ while hoarding surveillance gadgets in a Norfolk hotel. He described his accommodation as an ‘Indiana Jones warehouse’ filled with equipment for intrusive surveillance missions across Europe.
Detectives discovered thousands of items at Roussev’s Norfolk guesthouse, including a cap with a concealed camera and a plastic Coke bottle containing a hidden waterproof camera. The spy ring is also linked to an alleged ‘honeytrap’ plot against investigative journalist Christo Grozev in 2021.
