University of Zurich Celebrates Anniversary at Irchel Campus

The University of Zurich (UZH) celebrated its 193rd anniversary on May 8, 2026, during the Dies academicus festivities held at the Irchel Campus. The event brought together distinguished figures from society, academia, and university teaching, and research.
The celebration was hosted by Tanya König and accompanied by the Academic Orchestra Zurich. Government councilor Silvia Steiner, who serves as the President of the Board of the University, delivered the celebratory speech.
As part of the proceedings, the university presented a video showcasing research highlights from across UZH’s seven faculties.
AI Integration in Academic Leadership
President Michael Schaepman delivered his annual address, which included a discussion between the president and an AI-generated twin of himself. Developed by an interdisciplinary team, this demonstration was intended to show that artificial intelligence presents meaningful opportunities for research as well as challenging opportunities for teaching and learning.

Institutional Advocacy and Financial Oversight
The event featured an address from the Association of Senior Researchers and Teaching Staff (VFFL). The association used the platform to advocate for the interests of its members, specifically regarding the shaping of teaching and research and the importance of co-determination.

Following the VFFL address, Vice President Finances Daniel Hug provided insights into the complex nature of the funding supporting the university.
Support for Early-Career Researchers
A key part of the university’s mission emphasized during the festivities was the support of early-career researchers. On behalf of the faculties, Vice President Research Elisabeth Stark presented annual awards to seven outstanding early-career researchers.
