On Wednesday afternoon, a freight train became stranded at a level crossing in Oisterwijk, splitting the town in two for over two hours and causing significant traffic disruption. The incident occurred when a mechanical failure affected the locomotive, leaving the train immobile on the tracks. Four of the six level crossings in the area were closed, trapping vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians on either side of the railway line.

According to a spokesperson for ProRail, the Dutch rail infrastructure manager, the problem stemmed from a technical defect in the locomotive. The stranded train, composed primarily of empty freight wagons and measuring several hundred metres in length, was later towed away by another locomotive. Normal rail service was restored around 4:15 p.m., after which the blocked crossings were reopened.

Local residents reported growing frustration as queues built up along key routes including the Heusdensebaan, Almstraat, Gasthuisstraat, and Pannenschuurlaan. With most crossings impassable, the only available routes for pedestrians and cyclists were via the crossings at Heukelomseweg and Laarakkerweg, necessitating detours through neighbouring areas such as Haaren and Heukelom. Some individuals, impatient with the delays, were observed crossing the tracks illegally despite the barriers being down.

Authorities noted a lack of visible police presence at the scene, with one bystander commenting that there was little to no supervision to deter unsafe crossings. Despite the risks, a few motorists also attempted to bypass the barriers, weaving through the lowered booms to reach the other side of town.

The event disrupted daily life in Oisterwijk, highlighting the community’s reliance on uninterrupted rail and road infrastructure. While no injuries were reported, the incident underscored the potential for cascading delays when freight traffic encounters technical issues on shared rail corridors.
