US President Donald Trump has suggested that Venezuela could become the 51st state of the United States, sparking diplomatic tension through social media and media interviews.
On May 13, 2026, Trump posted a map of the South American nation on his platform, Truth Social. The map depicted Venezuela in the design of the United States flag and featured the text 51st State.
This social media post followed a telephone conversation on May 11, 2026, between Trump and a journalist from the US network Fox News. According to the journalist, Trump stated during the call that he was seriously considering making Venezuela the 51st state of the US.
The acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, rejected the suggestions made by the US president.
“That is not planned,” said acting President Delcy Rodríguez. “Venezuela is not a colony, and the government in Caracas will continue to protect the integrity, sovereignty, and independence of the country.”
Rodríguez further stated that Trump is aware that the two nations have been working on a diplomatic agenda of cooperation, which she described as the correct course and path forward.
These comments regarding Venezuela follow a pattern of territorial claims made by Trump in the past. He has previously suggested that Canada should be brought under US control to become the 51st state, a proposal that Canada has strictly rejected.
Trump has also previously made claims regarding Greenland, an island belonging to Denmark and a Nato partner, which caused significant dissatisfaction in Europe.
