The Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, widely known as the Trofeo Conde de Godó (Count of Godó Trophy), stands as one of the most prominent fixtures on the ATP Tour in Spain. Currently categorized as an ATP Tour 500 event, the tournament is played on outdoor clay courts at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona in the Pedralbes neighborhood of the Les Corts district.

The 2026 edition of the tournament features a prize pool of €2,950,310. While the event remains a major draw for international stars, Carlos Alcaraz, one of the tournament’s primary attractions, was forced to withdraw from the 2026 competition due to injury.

The Legacy of Carlos Godó Valls

The tournament is named in honor of its founder, Carlos Godó Valls, the second Count of Godó. This noble title was originally created in 1916 by King Alfonso XIII for Ramón Godó Lallana, a deputy of the Cortes and the founder of the newspaper La Vanguardia.

Born in Barcelona in 1899, Carlos Godó Valls was a dedicated sports enthusiast. During his leadership at La Vanguardia, he promoted various publications, including Mundo Deportivo. His influence in Spanish sports extended to football, serving as the treasurer of Fútbol Club Barcelona in 1940 during the Civil War.

Godó Valls’ most enduring contribution to sports was the establishment of the tournament in 1953. He served as the president of the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona from 1935 until 1960 and initiated the event to coincide with the inauguration of the club’s new headquarters in Pedralbes.

The first edition held in June 1953 was designed to reflect the international vocation of Spain’s oldest tennis club, drawing from previous local competitions such as the International Championship and various club tournaments.

Tournament Evolution and History

The inaugural singles title was won by American player Vic Seixas, who was the third-ranked player at the time and also won Wimbledon that same year. Seixas defeated Enrique Morea in the final with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 22-20; the final set remains the record for the most games played in a set in the tournament’s history.

From its inception in 1953 until 1980, the event was held as a combined men’s and women’s tournament. Its professional standing evolved over the decades, serving as part of the Grand Prix tennis circuit from 1970 to 1989, with the exception of 1971 when it joined the World Championship Tennis (WCT) circuit while remaining open to non-WCT players.

The tournament has been held consistently since 1953, with the only exception being 2020, when the event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Champions and Records

The Barcelona Open has seen a history of dominance by several legendary players. Rafael Nadal is the most successful player in the tournament’s history, securing 12 titles, with his most recent victory occurring in 2021.

Recent results show Holger Rune as the singles champion for 2025, while the doubles title was won by the pairing of Sander Arends and Luke Johnson.

The event typically takes place during the last week of April, coinciding with Barcelona’s spring temperatures. As of 2026, the tournament has reached its 73rd edition.
