Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox console is shaping up to be a significant departure from its predecessors, aiming for a premium experience that blurs the lines between console and PC gaming. The project, described as “the largest technical leap you’ve ever seen in a hardware generation” by Xbox President Sarah Bond, is now firmly targeting a 2027 launch, according to recent confirmations from both Microsoft and its key hardware partner, AMD.

The timeline received a crucial boost on February 4, 2026, when AMD CEO Lisa Su stated during the company’s Q4 2025 earnings call that development of the next-gen Xbox, featuring a semi-custom AMD system-on-a-chip (SoC), is “progressing well to support a launch in 2027.” This represents the most concrete confirmation of the release window to date. Previously, internal Microsoft documents revealed during the FTC trial regarding the Activision-Blizzard acquisition had suggested a potential 2028 release, but AMD’s statement indicates a move forward.

The new Xbox is envisioned as more than just a gaming console. it’s being positioned as a “premium living room PC,” appealing to enthusiasts who desire a hybrid gaming experience. This ambition is reflected in the console’s planned capabilities, including full Windows support with a TV-optimized interface. Unlike previous Xbox generations, the next console will support multiple digital storefronts from “day one,” including the Xbox Store, Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG, according to reports. This openness represents a significant shift in Microsoft’s strategy, offering gamers greater choice in where they purchase their games.

At the heart of the next-gen Xbox will be a custom AMD semi-custom SoC, codenamed “Magnus.” This chip is expected to combine Zen 6 CPU cores with an RDNA 5 GPU. The choice of Zen 6 and RDNA 5 represents a substantial upgrade over the current Xbox Series X, promising significant improvements in processing and graphics performance. However, the path to 2027 isn’t without challenges. Rising costs, particularly for RAM driven by demand from AI development, are creating uncertainty around the final pricing and production timelines.

Current estimates place the price of the next-gen Xbox between $800 and $1200, but these figures could potentially be higher due to the ongoing RAM shortages. The increased cost of components is a significant concern for Microsoft, as it aims to position the console as a premium product without alienating its existing customer base. The company is balancing the desire for cutting-edge technology with the need to maintain a competitive price point.

Microsoft and AMD have a long-standing partnership in the Xbox ecosystem. Both the Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles utilize semi-custom AMD SoCs. This collaboration was further strengthened in June 2025 with a strategic multi-year partnership encompassing PC, handheld, cloud, and console hardware. More recently, the two companies collaborated on the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X, demonstrating their continued commitment to innovation in the gaming space.

The development of the next Xbox aligns with the traditional seven-year console cycle, with the Xbox Series X having launched in November 2020. However, the shift towards a more PC-like architecture and the inclusion of multiple storefronts suggest a fundamental rethinking of the console experience. Microsoft is aiming to create a platform that caters to a wider range of gamers, from casual players to hardcore enthusiasts.

The “next generation hybrid game platform,” as described in internal Microsoft documents, is intended to offer a curated premium experience. While details remain scarce, this suggests a focus on high-quality games, advanced features, and seamless integration with Microsoft’s broader ecosystem. The console’s ability to run full Windows opens up possibilities for a wider range of applications and services, potentially transforming the Xbox into a more versatile entertainment hub.

The success of the next-gen Xbox will depend on Microsoft’s ability to navigate the challenges of component costs, maintain a competitive price point, and deliver on its promise of a truly innovative gaming experience. The move towards a more open platform, with support for multiple storefronts, is a bold step that could reshape the console landscape. As development progresses, further details are expected to emerge, providing a clearer picture of Microsoft’s vision for the future of Xbox.
