Xiaomi 17 Ultra: Redefining Smartphone Photography With Leica Optics

Xiaomi has expanded its flagship smartphone lineup with the Xiaomi 17 Ultra, introducing a camera system centered on a 200-megapixel telephoto lens and mechanical optical zoom. This hardware configuration aims to bridge the gap between mobile photography and professional equipment by integrating specialized Leica optics.

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra features a Leica telephoto camera with a 200MP sensor and a 1/1.4-inch sensor size. The lens supports a mechanical optical zoom range of 75mm to 100mm, providing up to 17.2x optical-level zoom and 30cm macro photography capabilities.

Complementing the telephoto lens is a 50MP Leica main camera utilizing a 1-inch sensor. This sensor, identified as the Light Fusion 1050L, incorporates LOFIC HDR technology to improve highlight control and night imagery.

Advanced Optical Engineering

The device employs a Leica UltraPure optical design and Leica APO optical lenses to maintain image clarity. The main camera features an f/1.67 aperture and optical image stabilization (OIS), while the ultra-wide camera provides a 50MP sensor with a 115-degree field of view and 5cm macro capabilities.

According to Xiaomi Global, the LOFIC HDR technology is designed to transcend the limits of light and shadow, allowing the sensor to capture essential details in high-contrast environments.

The chassis measures 8.29mm in thickness and features a flat body and flat display with ultra-thin bezels. For durability, the device uses Xiaomi Shield Glass 3.0, which Xiaomi claims offers 30% more drop resistance, alongside an aluminum alloy frame and a composite fiberglass back.

The device is rated IP54 for splash and dust resistance and uses Corning Gorilla Glass 7i for the camera cover glass.

Alongside the Ultra model, the standard Xiaomi 17 offers a more compact 6.3-inch form factor. While the Ultra focuses on maximum zoom and sensor size, the Xiaomi 17 emphasizes portability and battery density.

The Xiaomi 17 utilizes a high-energy-density silicon-carbon battery with 16% silicon content, resulting in a higher capacity of 6330mAh. Charging for the standard model is supported via 100W wired HyperCharge and 50W wireless HyperCharge, with 22.5W wired reverse charging capability.

The camera system on the Xiaomi 17 is different from the Ultra, utilizing the Light Fusion 950 high dynamic sensor for its 50MP main camera. It also includes a 50MP floating telephoto lens with a 60mm focal length and a 50MP ultra-wide camera with a 102-degree field of view.

Market Reception and Availability

The Xiaomi 17 Ultra has already entered the review cycle, with GSMArena testing the Leica Edition on January 21, 2026. The Leica Edition is noted for arriving in specialized packaging that includes a compatible charger and a braided USB-A to USB-C cable.

Both the Xiaomi 17 and 17 Ultra leverage the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform to integrate AI productivity features into the user experience.
