Jericho, Vermont – A 18-year-old runner from Jericho is set to compete in the Boston Marathon, marking a significant milestone as one of the youngest Vermonters ever to qualify for the prestigious race.

Zane White, a senior at Milton High School, earned his Boston Marathon qualifying time during a fall marathon in Vermont, surpassing the stringent time standards required for his age group. His achievement places him among a select group of teenage runners to have met the qualifying benchmark for the historic 26.2-mile race.

White’s journey to Boston began with a personal bet: he challenged himself to run 26 miles on a treadmill, a feat he completed earlier this year. That effort, initially undertaken as a personal challenge, evolved into serious training that culminated in his qualifying performance.

His accomplishment has drawn attention not only for his age but also for representing a growing trend of youth participation in long-distance running. White’s qualifying time reflects months of disciplined training, often conducted after school and on weekends, supported by his family and local running community.

The Boston Marathon, one of the world’s oldest annual marathons and a qualifying race for many elite athletes, maintains strict age- and gender-based time standards. For male runners aged 18 to 34, the qualifying standard is 3 hours and 00 minutes. White’s verified time fell just under this threshold, securing his entry.

White is set to join thousands of runners from around the world in Hopkinton on Patriot’s Day, April 20, 2026, for the 130th running of the Boston Marathon. His participation highlights the continued accessibility of the race to developing athletes who meet its rigorous standards through perseverance and training.

As he prepares for the race, White remains focused on the challenge ahead, viewing the marathon not only as a personal goal but as an opportunity to inspire other young athletes in Vermont and beyond to pursue endurance sports with discipline and purpose.
