Sofia‘s Low-Emission Zone Nets Nearly 4,000 Violations in first Day
Sofia, Bulgaria – Nearly 4,000 drivers were caught violating Sofia’s new low-emission zone restrictions on its first day of enforcement, according to Dimitris Petrov, director of the Traffic Management and Analysis Directorate of the Sofia Municipality.
The restricted zone, dubbed the “small ring,” encompasses the area bounded by boulevards Vasil Levski, Patriarch Evtimiy, General Skobelev, Slivnitsa, and Opalchenska Street. The ban targets vehicles classified in the first and second eco groups and will remain in effect until February 28th.
Drivers caught violating the restrictions face a fine of 50 leva. “Violators will only be penalized once per day,” Petrov explained in an interview with Bulgarian national Television (BNT). “If they enter the zone with the same vehicle the following day, they will be fined again.”
Petrov emphasized that the enforcement process is fully automated, utilizing software to identify violators. Cameras capture vehicle details, which is then cross-referenced to determine if the vehicle falls under the restricted categories.
