- Zelensky: Ukrainians Know What They Want
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky answered questions from readers of the French newspaper Le Parisien, addressing the possibility of compromise to end the war and weather Ukraine would consider relinquishing control of Crimea or the Donbas region.
Zelensky emphasized that ending the war hinges on international assistance. “We cannot give up our territories,” he stated. “the ukrainian Constitution forbids us from doing so. De facto, these territories are currently controlled by the Russians. We do not have the strength to reclaim them. We can only rely on diplomatic pressure from the international community to force putin to the negotiating table.”
Zelensky also expressed frustration with the West’s cautious approach to supporting Ukraine. “I wonder why the West, which supports us, is hesitant with him?” he questioned. “Why weren’t we massively equipped with weapons from the beginning of the war? I may seem arrogant, but I have the impression that everyone is afraid of Putin’s Russia. He enjoys impunity.”

I don’t think we are in a weak position, but we can’t call it strong either. Will we be part of NATO? We don’t know if we will be part of the European union? Yes, in the future, but when? To sit down with Putin under these conditions would be to give him the right to decide for us.”
Zelensky underscored the need for a clear plan of action before engaging in any talks with russia. “First, we need to develop a plan and only then present it to the Russian president,” he asserted.
He also stressed the importance of Ukrainian leadership in any negotiations. “But I insist: no leader in the world has the right to negotiate with Putin without Ukraine. we have never delegated this mandate to anyone. We are the victims. It would be unfair if everyone started deciding for us how our country shoudl live. The French in France…”
