top US General holds First Call with Russian Counterpart Amid Ukraine war
Washington, D.C. – In a move signaling potential for dialog amid heightened global tensions, General Charles Q. Brown Jr., Chairman of the joint Chiefs of Staff, spoke by phone last week with General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the Russian General Staff.
This marked the first conversation between the two military leaders.
“The two leaders discussed a number of issues related to global and regional security, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine,” a spokesperson for General Brown said in a statement.
The call took place on November 27th. However, at the request of general Gerasimov, General Brown agreed to keep the conversation low-key. The Russian Ministry of Defense initiated the call, according to the spokesperson.
General Brown assumed his role as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff last year. The last time a Russian Chief of the General Staff spoke with a top US military official was when General gerasimov spoke with General Mark Milley, General Brown’s predecessor.
This development comes as the war in Ukraine continues to dominate global headlines and raise concerns about potential escalation.

Kyiv Targets Russian Territory Despite Moscow’s Escalation Warnings
Tensions between Russia and Ukraine escalated dramatically as Ukrainian forces launched American and British-supplied missiles into Russian territory. The move comes despite stern warnings from Moscow that such actions would be considered a significant escalation.
Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in a televised address that Moscow had struck a Ukrainian military target using a new, medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile dubbed “Oreshnik.” He warned that further strikes could follow.
U.S. officials confirmed that Russia had notified Washington shortly before the attack.
