Zelensky Slams Orban’s Mediation Attempts, Says Hungary Lacks Leverage Over Russia
ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky sharply criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban‘s attempts to act as a mediator in the war with Russia, arguing that Hungary lacks the influence to pressure the Kremlin.
Speaking at the All-ukrainian Congress of local and regional Authorities on Tuesday, Zelensky emphasized Ukraine’s strength and resilience in the face of Russian aggression.
“Ukraine is a strong country. We’ve shown that on the battlefield throughout Putin’s entire war,” Zelensky stated. “Does anyone else in Europe have that experience? No. Does Orban have such an army? No. How will he pressure Putin? With a joke, a smile? Let him keep that to himself.”
Zelensky stressed the importance of direct relations between Ukraine and the United States, without intermediaries.
“We need direct relationships with the United States, without any middlemen,” he added.
Zelensky Vows to Block Orban From Ukraine, Citing Hungary’s Pro-russia Stance
President Volodymyr Zelensky declared he would prevent Hungarian Prime Minister viktor Orban from entering Ukraine, citing Orban’s close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“He won’t get in, and neither will those like him,” Zelensky stated, emphasizing that his stance was directed at Orban personally, not the Hungarian people, many of whom support Ukraine.
Tensions between Kyiv and Budapest have escalated following Orban’s phone call with Putin last week. Orban subsequently claimed he proposed a Christmas ceasefire and large-scale prisoner exchange to Zelensky, but the Ukrainian president allegedly rejected the offer.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto asserted that Kyiv refused a phone call between Orban and Zelensky to discuss the Hungarian “ceasefire” proposal.Szijjarto also expressed frustration that “almost no one in the EU” supported the proposed “Christmas truce.”
