Bike Safety Under Scrutiny After Two Fatal Accidents in Bulgaria
Following two separate fatal accidents involving motorized bicycles in Varna and Burgas within days, experts are raising concerns about bike safety and regulations.
we spoke wiht Dr. Maria Petrova, a traffic safety specialist at the Bulgarian Road Safety Institute, to discuss the incidents and broader issues surrounding motorized bicycles.
NewsDirectory3: Dr.Petrova, two cyclists tragically lost their lives in accidents this week. What are your initial thoughts on these incidents?
Dr. Petrova: These are truly devastating events, and our thoughts are with the families of the victims. While investigations are ongoing, these incidents highlight the urgent need to address the safety considerations surrounding motorized bicycles.
NewsDirectory3: both cyclists were riding “Sprint Leopard” bicycles equipped with additional gasoline engines. Does this type of modification raise specific concerns?

Current regulations often fail to adequately address these modifications, leading to a gray area in terms of licensing, safety requirements, and rider training.

Dr. Petrova: We need a multi-faceted approach. Firstly, clear and comprehensive regulations are vital for motorized bicycles, addressing issues like engine power limitations, mandatory safety equipment, and appropriate licensing requirements. Secondly, dedicated infrastructure for cyclists, including separated bike lanes and paths, is crucial to minimize the risk of collisions. public awareness campaigns emphasizing safe riding practices and the importance of adhering to traffic rules are essential.
