The Iraqi Football Association (IFA) has officially called for an extraordinary general assembly meeting scheduled for May 23, 2026, to initiate preparations for the election of its new executive committee. The upcoming electoral process will determine the leadership of the association for the 2026-2030 term.
This move follows a roadmap approved by both the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), and has received the necessary approval from the association’s current executive committee.
The electoral conference is expected to take place at the Al-Rasheed Hotel, where the association will execute a structured agenda to ensure a transparent transition of power. The scheduled proceedings include the calling of attendees, the formal declaration of the conference’s opening, and a speech delivered by the president.
Following the opening formalities, the assembly will appoint members to verify the minutes of the meeting and designate vote counters to oversee the balloting process. The meeting will culminate in the election of the president, the first and second vice-presidents, and the members of the executive committee.
The race for the presidency of the executive committee features three primary candidates: Iyad Binyan Mohammed, Adnan Dirjal Mutar, and Younis Mahmoud Khalaf.
For the position of first vice-president, the association has announced a list of four candidates: Sarmad Abdul-Ilah Mohammed, Ali Jabbar Abdul-Ridha, Firas Radi Hussein, and Koufa Nad Abdul-Khaliq Masoud.
The competition for the second vice-president position is more crowded, with five individuals vying for the role: Saddam Aziz Khalaf, Abdullah Jalal al-Din, Ali Jabbar Fadhil, Mohammed Nasser Shukroun, and Yasser Saeed Hassan.
In addition to the top leadership roles, the IFA is seeking to fill the broader executive committee. We find 27 candidates running for these positions, a group that notably includes female candidates.
The lead-up to the May 23 meeting has seen significant coordination among football stakeholders in the capital. Clubs based in Baghdad recently held an extensive meeting at the Al-Zawraa Club to discuss the mechanisms and strategies for dealing with the upcoming association elections.
Beyond the sporting community, the political landscape has also intersected with the electoral process. The Parliamentary Committee for Labor, Youth, and Sports recently held a periodic meeting where the football association elections were a key point of discussion alongside the national labor law.
The adherence to the FIFA and AFC roadmap underscores the association’s effort to align its internal governance with international standards as it enters the 2026-2030 cycle.
