U.S. Vice President JD Vance joked during a press conference on May 13, 2026, that he felt like the protagonist of the comedy film Home Alone while President Donald Trump traveled to China for a high-level summit.

Speaking to reporters, Vance compared his experience at the White House to that of actor Macaulay Culkin, the child star of the 1990s holiday movie. The Vice President noted that the President had left him behind in Washington as Trump departed for Beijing to attend a summit described as being of extreme importance.

Vance described the atmosphere of the West Wing during the President’s absence, stating that he had been walking through the corridors of the executive office building and found them unusually empty.

I enter the White House, and I find it very quiet, and no one is there, and it takes time for me to realize exactly what is happening, Vance told journalists.

The Vice President explicitly linked this feeling of isolation to the cinematic character of Culkin, stating, I sometimes feel like Macaulay Culkin in the movie Home Alone.

The reference to the film carries a particular irony given the President’s own history with the franchise. Donald Trump appeared as a guest star in the second installment of the movie series, which was released in 1992.

Vance’s comments came as President Trump arrived in China. During the press conference, the Vice President confirmed that Trump has just landed in China.

While the Vice President remained in Washington, the President traveled with a specific group of advisors and guests. The presidential party included senior diplomatic advisors and a delegation consisting of American technology billionaires.

It was noted that Vance was not included on the guest list for the trip to Beijing, leaving him to manage his duties in the quieted West Wing while the President conducted diplomatic business in Asia.
