A 16-year-old girl in Maharashtra’s Thane district reportedly took her own life after her family objected to her relationship with a male cousin, police said Thursday. The tragic incident occurred Tuesday in the Khambalpada area of Dombivli.
According to authorities at the Tilak Nagar police station, the girl had informed her family of her love for her 25-year-old cousin, a resident of the Ulhasnagar area of Thane. Her parents strongly disapproved of the relationship, police said.
On Tuesday afternoon, the girl allegedly hanged herself inside her home. Family members rushed her to a nearby hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead, according to officials. The body was then sent to a government hospital for post-mortem examination.
Police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating the teen suicide and the circumstances surrounding the relationship dispute in the Thane district.
