The diplomatic summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded on May 15, 2026, in Beijing. While the official atmosphere of the meetings was described as friendly, several reports highlighted a series of chaotic incidents and unconventional interactions that occurred throughout the three-day, two-night visit.

The British publication Daily Mirror identified seven surprising moments from the trip, focusing on both public appearances and behind-the-scenes friction. These reports detailed instances of physical tension and verbal conflicts that contrasted with the formal nature of the bilateral talks.

One of the primary incidents occurred on May 14 during a welcome ceremony at the Great Hall of the People. During their initial handshake, President Trump maintained a tight grip on President Xi’s hand, a gesture interpreted as an attempt to project personal power. According to reporting from China Times, President Xi appeared to restrain this behavior, resisting Trump’s attempt to prolong the handshake or pull him closer.

This interaction followed a pattern of strong handshakes associated with President Trump. In a previous visit to Japan, Trump held a handshake with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi for 19 seconds. During a visit to Washington D.C. This month, Trump attempted to use a handshake to pull King Charles III closer.

Further disruptions were reported just before the start of the bilateral talks at the Great Hall of the People. As delegations prepared to take their seats, a man was recorded shouting “Get out” in English, interspersed with swear words, at the entrance. The incident, which was captured on video and shared on social media, appeared to stem from a clash among accompanying media members who were pushing to secure photographs.

During the commotion, a photographer’s camera fell to the floor. The shouting was loud enough to draw the attention of President Trump and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, both of whom looked toward the doorway as the conflict unfolded.

Other media outlets reported additional instances of disorder during the visit. Reports from CNA and Newtalk described scenes of physical conflict, including White House aides being stepped on and U.S. Media members and Secret Service personnel being blocked. UDN described the level of chaos surrounding the event as resembling a disaster movie.

The visit concluded on May 15, which included a tour of the Zhongnanhai Garden in Beijing. Despite the reported frictions and the “surprising moments” highlighted by international media, the formal proceedings of the summit were presented as having a friendly tone.
