The three major New York stock market indices all closed lower on the 12th (local time). The stock market, which has been hitting record highs day after day thanks to the victory of US President-elect Donald Trump, appears to be finding a real turning point.

On this day, on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the blue chip-centered Dow Jones Industrial Average ended trading at 43,910.98, down 382.15 points (0.86%) from the previous day. The S&P 500 index, centered on large-cap stocks, recorded 5983.99, 17.36 points (0.29%) lower than the previous day. The Nasdaq Composite Index, centered on technology stocks, closed at 19,281.40, down 17.36 points (0.09%) from the previous day. This is the first time since the 4th that the three major stock indexes closed simultaneously with a decline.

By stock, Trump-beneficiary stocks all fell. Elon Musk’s Tesla, which contributed greatly to Trump’s presidential election victory, fell 6.1%. Trump Media & Technology (DJT) plunged 8.8%. Among the Magnificent 7 (M7) stocks, which represent the seven largest technology companies in the United States, all stocks rose except Tesla. NVIDIA rose 2.09%, further solidifying its position as number one in market capitalization. Microsoft and Amazon also rose by about 1%. Metaplatforms and Alphabet formed a strong alliance.

Stock prices, which had been rising due to expectations for the second Trump administration, were adjusted with awareness of short-term overheating. In particular, as small-cap stocks, which were seen as potential beneficiaries of the second Trump administration, were under overall pressure, the Russell 2000 index, which consists mainly of small and mid-cap stocks, fell 1.77%.

Mark Malek, Chief Investment Officer (CIO) of Siebert Financial, said, “The market may have gone too far ahead even before Trump’s second term was launched,” and added, “What drove the day’s trading was a bit of fatigue.” He continued, “Federal government debt and fiscal deficit are always a concern, but the market is now seeing this as a problem.” He continued, “With the market already suffering from indigestion, the fiscal deficit and debt issue could be a reason to take their foot off the accelerator.” “You can,” he added.
