Jeon Cheong-jo Sentenced to Four Years in Prison for Assault and Fraud
Jeon Cheong-jo, the ex-boyfriend of former national fencing team member Nam Hyun-hee, has been sentenced to four years in prison for assaulting Nam’s middle school nephew and defrauding seven people of 300 million won.
According to the court, Jeon’s crime was serious, as he threatened a young student and deceived people who took loans and transferred money to him. However, Jeon used the money to live a luxurious life.
Jeon’s Crimes
Jeon was accused of hitting Nam’s nephew with the handle of a children’s golf club in August last year and sending a threatening text message demanding pocket money in April the same year.
He also pretended to be the hidden son of a chaebol family and extorted 100 million won from three men and nearly 200 million won from four men he met through a dating app posing as a female equestrian athlete.
Court Ruling
The court ruled that Jeon committed a serious offense by attacking a young student with a dangerous object and threatening to stop him from reporting the case, saying he was disciplining the student.
The court also criticized Jeon for lying about his identity as if he were a wealthy man, despite being a repeat offender, and taking money from victims in addition to debt, but continuing to live a luxurious life with that money.
However, the court took into account Jeon’s admission of guilt.
Separate Case
In a separate case, Jeon acted like a third-generation chaebol and committed a 3 billion won fraud and was sentenced to 12 years in prison at the first trial and appealed.
The police decided not to forward Nam as an accomplice in Jeon’s fraud, saying there were no charges, but the prosecution requested a reinvestigation.
