[트럼프 재집권] Trump nominates ‘America First champion’ as UN ambassador… Will he withdraw from the UN?

[뉴욕=뉴스핌]Correspondent Geun-cheol Kim = The 47th President-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, announced on the 11th (local time) that he had nominated Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (40) as Ambassador to the United Nations.

According to the New York Times (NYT) and Reuters, President-elect Trump said in a statement on this day, “I am honored to nominate Elise Stefanik as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in my cabinet. Elise is a very strong, tough, smart, ‘America First’ person.” “He is a fighter of .”

Stefanik graduated from Harvard University and was elected to the Republican House of Representatives in New York State in 2014. She entered politics as the youngest female member of the House of Representatives at the time, and has been successful in reappointment ever since.

Stefanik took a critical stance against Trump as a moderate within the party until the beginning of Trump’s first administration, but in 2019, he turned into a Trump loyalist with a hard-line conservative right-wing tendency when he directly confronted the Democratic Party’s attempt to impeach Trump.

Even immediately after the 2020 presidential election, Stefanik gained a lot of trust from Trump by actively participating in Trump’s claims of ‘election fraud’ and objection to election defeat.

In this year’s presidential election, she was considered a candidate for vice president alongside President-elect Trump.

With President-elect Trump nominating Stefanik, whom he praised as a “fighter for America First,” as ambassador to the United Nations, there is a high possibility that there will be a major change in America’s status at the United Nations in the future.

During his time in office, Trump expressed strong dissatisfaction with the functions and roles of international organizations such as the United Nations, taking an ‘America First’ stance, and pushed for a reduction in budget support. He also abruptly withdrew from the UN Paris Climate Agreement early in his term.

NYT reported on the 8th that the U.S. government rejoined the Paris Climate Agreement under President Joe Biden’s administration, but that President-elect Trump is preparing to withdraw again.

Reuters reported that the United Nations is also concerned about cuts in U.S. budget support, reduced activities, and withdrawal from international organizations due to Trump’s return to the White House, and is preparing for this.

The news agency also predicted that the withdrawal of the United States from the United Nations could open the door of opportunity for China, which is increasing its influence on the international diplomatic stage.
