The primary driver is the rapid depletion of the planet’s “carbon budget.” In 2020,scientists estimated that humanity could emit 500 billion more metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) for a 50% chance of staying below the 1.5C threshold. Though, by the start of 2025, this budget had shrunk to a mere 130 billion metric tons due to continued record CO2 emissions and improved scientific estimates.

Last year marked the first time global average air temperatures exceeded pre-industrial levels by more than 1.5C. While a single year doesn’t constitute a breach of the paris Agreement, the record heat of 2024, amplified by natural weather patterns, was primarily driven by human-caused warming, estimated at 1.36C above pre-industrial levels. The current warming rate is approximately 0.27C per decade, significantly faster than any period in geological history. Projections indicate that if emissions remain high, the planet will likely reach 1.5C of warming around 2030.
While technologies to remove CO2 from the atmosphere could theoretically reverse long-term warming, experts caution against relying solely on these solutions. Joeri Rogelj, professor of climate science and policy at Imperial College London, emphasized the limitations of such technologies. “For larger exceedance [of 1.5C] it becomes less likely that removals [of CO2] will perfectly reverse the warming caused by today’s emissions,” Rogelj said.
“Reductions in emissions over the next decade can critically change the rate of warming,” Rogelj added. “Every fraction of warming that we can avoid will result in less harm and less suffering of notably poor and vulnerable populations and less challenges for our societies to live the lives that we desire.”
