Team Bus Diverted as Community and Club Respond to Tragedy

The incident forced tournament organisers to divert the Newcastle Knights team bus along an alternative route as players prepared to travel to Sydney for the grand final against the Sydney Roosters. Knights officials issued a public apology for missed farewells, stressing that public safety remained their primary priority. NSW Premier Chris Minns described the crash as heartbreaking for a community brought together by the grand final, thanking police and paramedics for their swift response. My thoughts are with the families and friends of loved ones who have been involved or injured in the crash, he said in a statement. We’ve seen how this grand final has brought Newcastle together, and I hope the whole community remains united as we continue to respond.

Affected fans and players shared updates from John Hunter Hospital as the community processed the morning’s events. Injured supporter Chris Clancy posted from his hospital bed with a broken collarbone and a possible broken foot, prompting a supportive response from Knights captain Kalyn Ponga. All the best with recovery mate, Mr Ponga said, telling him the team and community are with yas. Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe is scheduled to appear in Newcastle Bail Court. Police inquiries into the exact mechanics of the crash remain ongoing.
