Sedentary Time in Youth Linked to Higher Blood Pressure

Spending excessive time sedentary, exceeding six hours daily from childhood into young adulthood, could lead to a 4 mmHg increase in systolic blood pressure, according to a new study.However,engaging in light physical activity (LPA) can considerably reduce this risk.
Researchers from the Universities of Bristol and Exeter in the United Kingdom, along with the University of Eastern Finland, collaborated on the study, which appeared in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle. The study tracked 2,513 children from the University of Bristol’s “Children of the 90s” cohort from age 11 to 24. Initially, participants spent about six hours daily sedentary, six hours in LPA, and roughly 55 minutes in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). By young adulthood, sedentary time increased to nine hours, LPA decreased to three hours, and MVPA remained around 50 minutes.

This research represents the largest and longest study of movement behavior and blood pressure in youth, using accelerometer measurements.Blood pressure, sedentary time, LPA, and MVPA were measured at ages 11, 15, and 24.Researchers also analyzed blood samples for cholesterol, glucose, insulin, and C-reactive protein, while considering factors like heart rate, socioeconomic status, family history of cardiovascular disease, smoking, and body composition.
Agbaje noted that previous research indicated that high blood pressure in adolescence can increase the risk of cardiac damage in young adulthood. Identifying childhood sedentariness as a cause of elevated blood pressure, with LPA as a countermeasure, holds significant clinical and public health importance. He added that MVPA-based trials have been unsuccessful in lowering blood pressure, possibly because MVPA-induced muscle mass enhances the physiological increase in blood pressure.

Agbaje recommends at least three hours of light physical activity per day to prevent and reverse high blood pressure, citing examples like walking, chores, swimming, and cycling. He urges parents, pediatricians, and policymakers to encourage LPA among children and adolescents to maintain healthy blood pressure levels. The World Health Organization estimates that physical inactivity could lead to 500 million new cases of non-communicable diseases by 2030, half of which would be due to hypertension.
