104IB Establishes Demo Farm in Sulu Town
Philippine Army Promotes Food Security in Sulu Through Community Farming
The 104th Infantry Battalion (104IB) of the Philippine Army has initiated a exhibition farm project in Sulu province, aimed at bolstering food security and providing livelihood opportunities for local residents. The project, launched last week, focuses on cultivating vegetables and root crops within a community of former Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) members in Kabbon village, Pandami, Sulu.
MNLF Community Participation and Training
Thirty MNLF members and their families participated in the initial farming activity, led by First Lieutenant Theo John Zapanta, executive officer of the 104IB’s Alpha Company, and coordinated with community leader Asmaullah Bairulla. The training emphasized practical agricultural techniques suited to the local environment. The initiative seeks to empower participants with the skills to grow their own food and possibly generate income.
Long-Term Goals and Peace-Building Efforts
The 104IB intends for the demonstration farm to serve as a model for other communities in Pandami, encouraging broader agricultural participation and contributing to long-term resilience. This project aligns with the Army’s broader strategy of peace-building through progress, focusing on self-reliant and productive livelihood programs. Executive Order No. 27, signed in 2017, outlines the government’s commitment to a whole-of-nation approach to peacebuilding, wich includes livelihood programs.
As of January 12, 2026, there have been no reports of meaningful changes or updates to this initiative. The Philippine Army official website does not currently feature further details beyond the initial proclamation. The Department of Agriculture has not issued any statements regarding direct involvement in this specific project, but supports similar initiatives nationwide.
