12 Months of Devastation: The Gaza War’s Endless Tunnel of Suffering
Gaza War Enters 12th Month with No End in Sight
The war in the Gaza Strip has entered its twelfth month, resulting in 41 deaths, 95,000 wounded, and thousands still trapped under rubble. Despite ongoing negotiations, there is no light at the end of the tunnel, and no sign of a reduction in the intensity of the deadly Israeli bombings and raids.
Negotiations Stall
Negotiations to reach a ceasefire have been ongoing for months, but disagreements over key issues, including the Philadelphia border axis between Gaza and Egypt, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, and the number of Palestinian prisoners to be released in exchange for Israeli prisoners, have stalled the process.
Washington has repeatedly stated that it is working on a final proposal to strike a deal, but so far, nothing has been presented. CIA Director William Barnes, head of the US negotiating delegation, said that a more detailed proposal on a ceasefire would be presented within days, but expressed concerns that the last 10% of the agreement would be the hardest to reach.
Pessimistic Voices in Israel
Many in Israel are pessimistic about the chances of reaching a deal, with some blaming Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for derailing any potential agreement in order to protect his ruling coalition and avoid judicial review.
Channel 13 reported that Israeli estimates suggest there will be no deal, and that Netanyahu’s office has held strategic discussions that concluded that an agreement is unlikely. The channel also cited an informed source as saying that talks between mediators and Washington to present a compromise proposal with Hamas are not serious.
Netanyahu’s Priorities
Haaretz newspaper analyst Amos Harel argued that Netanyahu’s main consideration is ensuring his political survival, rather than securing the release of Israeli prisoners or ending the war. Harel claimed that Netanyahu’s unannounced plans include removing key officials from the war and negotiations, at a time when the Biden administration is trying to impose a deal on Netanyahu.
Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak called for Netanyahu to be ousted, stating that he is responsible for the failure to conduct the war and is lying about the Philadelphia axis. Barak also expressed his belief that Israel has achieved nothing in the Gaza war.
Uncertain Future
As the war enters its twelfth month, the possibility of stopping the conflict remains uncertain. While some believe that the government may fall, others think that the war will continue. One thing is clear: the situation in Gaza remains dire, and a resolution is desperately needed.
