12-Year-Old Arrested in Fatal Schoolyard Fight in Delhi
Vasant Vihar, Delhi – A 12-year-old student has been apprehended in connection with the death of his classmate at a private school in Delhi’s Vasant Vihar neighborhood. the incident, which occurred on tuesday morning, has sparked outrage and protests from the victim’s family, who allege negligence on the part of the school.
The deceased, identified as Prince, a Class 6 student at Chinmaya Vidyalaya, was rushed too the hospital around 9:30 am after a fight with another student. He was pronounced dead an hour later.
According to Delhi Police, CCTV footage captured the altercation between Prince and the suspect, showing the suspect pushing Prince against a wall, hitting him, and strangulating him.
“We scanned multiple CCTV cameras and found that Prince got into a fight with a boy of his age near the classroom door… The two started fighting after their shoulders brushed. The boy strangled Prince,” a senior police officer saeid. “We suspect the fight caused his death since he collapsed minutes later.”
while the footage shows the scuffle, it does not capture Prince collapsing. Police are awaiting the autopsy report to determine the exact cause of death.
The suspect, also a Class 6 student, was apprehended from his home in Munirka and booked under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Prince’s family, who belong to the Scheduled Caste community, have been vocal in their accusations against both the school and the police. Thay allege that the school governance failed to provide adequate care to Prince after the incident and that the police attempted to cover up the circumstances surrounding his death.
“When we reached the hospital on Tuesday morning, the teacher present there kept making excuses and didn’t clearly say anything about what really happened in the classroom when the scuffle broke out…We have been kept in the dark,” Prince’s mother, Neetu, said.
The family also claims that police pressured them to cremate Prince’s body hastily, preventing them from performing conventional rituals and mourning their son properly.
“We wanted to cremate our son at the nearby cremation ground but the police came to our house. They hurried us and took us to the Green Park area where authorities had already set a security parameter. They used lathis to disperse the crowd. even our relatives and friends were not allowed. Why did they hurry the cremation?” Prince’s father, Sagar, questioned.
The school administration has not yet responded to requests for comment.
