1,200 Trees Planted in Guayaquil: Reforestation Effort & Cleaner Air

Guayaquil, Ecuador is experiencing a green transformation, with a concerted effort underway to expand the city’s urban forest. A recent initiative saw nearly 1,200 trees planted along the Vía Perimetral and Vía a Daule traffic interchanges, a project fueled by the participation of 300 volunteers.

The planting event drew support from a diverse coalition, including Scouts of Ecuador, staff from the Sheraton hotel, and members of the Red Cross, demonstrating a broad community commitment to environmental improvement. The selection of tree species wasn’t arbitrary; varieties like white guayacán, black guayacán, guachapelí, pata de vaca, samancillo, laurel, mahogany, Colorado laurel, and almond were chosen specifically for their air-purifying qualities and aesthetic contributions to the cityscape.

This isn’t an isolated effort. The city is replicating the reforestation strategy at four additional interchanges along the Vía a Daule and Vía a la Costa routes, as well as along the Narcisa de Jesús highway. The scale of the project signals a significant investment in urban greening, moving beyond isolated plantings to a systemic approach to environmental enhancement.

Cristian Sisalema, a key figure involved in the initiative, emphasized the visual impact of the project, stating, “We are helping Guayaquil look greener, with a better image of the city. Thanks to the trees, air purification and oxygenation are improved.” This highlights a dual benefit – the aesthetic improvement of the urban landscape alongside tangible environmental gains.

The current wave of reforestation brings the total number of trees planted across various sectors of Guayaquil under the administration of Mayor Aquiles Alvarez to over 18,000. The Municipality of Guayaquil has expressed its gratitude to the citizens and organizations who have contributed to this effort, and is actively encouraging continued participation. Ecuador has been making headlines recently for its ambitious reforestation projects. While a nationwide “Siembratón” (plant-a-thon) in May of 2024 saw over 647,250 trees planted, it was the diversity of species – over 200 different types – that earned the country a Guinness World Record. This contrasts with previous records, which focused on sheer volume of seedlings planted, like the Philippines’ impressive 3.2 million seedlings in a single hour. The Ecuadorian approach prioritizes biodiversity and ecosystem restoration, a strategy that appears to be influencing local initiatives like the one in Guayaquil.

Beyond the record-breaking national effort, several organizations are contributing to reforestation efforts across the country. Pluspetrol, for example, has been running its “One More Tree Makes a Difference” initiative since 2022, engaging over 700 volunteers in planting over 6,300 native trees in Quito and Pastaza. These trees are projected to capture up to 162 tons of CO2 annually upon maturity, demonstrating a commitment to carbon capture and climate change mitigation.

Similarly, EcuadorianHands has been actively involved in reforestation, recently planting 12,000 Palo Santo trees with the participation of 50 students and faculty from ULEAM, focusing on restoring the dry forest on the grounds of the Manta Medical Center. The focus on native species, like the Palo Santo, is a recurring theme in Ecuador’s reforestation efforts, emphasizing the importance of ecological restoration and species recovery.

The Dirección de Ambiente in Guayaquil also recently contributed to reforestation efforts, planting 200 native seedlings in the Bosque Protector Bosqueira, as part of a broader initiative called “Guayaquil de todos los árboles.” This demonstrates a multi-faceted approach to urban forestry, involving both large-scale plantings and targeted restoration projects.

The success of these initiatives hinges on careful species selection. The Fsembrando Esperanza organization highlights the importance of choosing trees adapted to the local environment, citing alder, myrtle, hawthorn, cholan, and guarango as examples of species suitable for reforestation efforts, particularly in areas affected by recent fires. This underscores the need for a nuanced understanding of local ecosystems when planning and executing reforestation projects.
