The 13th-ranked Catawba College women’s soccer team opened its 2026 season on Thursday night with a 5-0 victory over Concord at Frock Field in Salisbury, North Carolina, according to Catawba College athletics reporting. Five different players scored for the Catawba Indians in a match where the hosts out-shot the Mountain Lions 23-4 and earned a 14-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Catawba College Opens 2026 Season With Five Goals Against Concord
According to Catawba College, the Thursday night season opener saw Kate Robinson, Natalie Peterson, Bree Ehmer, Avery Rush, and Ryen Gibbs each score a goal for the hosts. The offensive effort lifted the Catawba Indians to a 1-0 record while dropping Concord to 0-1. Ella Matthews recorded two assists in the match after entering the contest with just one assist across her previous three seasons. Cadence Setzer added an assist to pick up her first career point in a Catawba uniform. Goalkeeper Lauren Zitt faced two shots, stopped both, and secured her second career win in as many starts.

According to Catawba College reporting, the scoring started in the first half when Robinson sent a ball back into the box toward the goal, where teammate Ali Skinner screened a defender as the ball traveled through both players’ legs and into the net. In the 24th minute, Setzer found Peterson open at the top of the box for a shot that extended the lead to 2-0. Ehmer added the third goal following the first round of substitutions. The attacking pressure continued late into the second half. Rush scored off a pass from Matthews with 1:28 remaining in regulation, and Gibbs added the final goal in the closing seconds by capitalizing on a stranded goalkeeper. Catawba’s 14 corner kicks fell one shy of matching a high from the previous season, with 10 of those corners coming in the first half alone.

According to Catawba College, the team has now won its season opener in 10 consecutive seasons, outscoring opponents 27-5 in season openers since 2017. The Catawba Indians return to Frock Field on August 30 at 11:00 AM to play Tampa.
