Enforcement Operation Targets 15 Retail Outlets
An enforcement operation led by the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) and Sky targeted fifteen retail outlets across nine counties in Ireland last month, aiming to disrupt the sale of illegal streaming services and devices. The operation focused on retailers in Cavan, Donegal, Kerry, Kilkenny, Laois, Louth, Mayo, Meath, and Wexford.
FACT agents, alongside representatives from Sky, delivered legal notices to the outlets, which were found to be either selling subscriptions to illegal streaming services, supplying pre-configured devices, or directing customers to resellers through advertising or phone numbers.
Legal Notices and Retailer Compliance
While the notices issued by FACT are not legally binding, they clearly outline the potential consequences for retailers continuing to engage in illegal activity.According to FACT, the “vast majority” of the targeted outlets have agreed to cease these activities. This marks the frist time FACT’s enforcement teams have directly focused on retail outlets as part of their efforts.
broader Efforts to Combat Illegal Streaming
Kieron Sharpe, Chairman of FACT, stated the operation demonstrates a commitment to targeting “every link in the illegal streaming supply chain.” JD Buckley, CEO of Sky Ireland, emphasized the risks to consumers, including fraud and identity theft, associated with illegal streaming, as well as the financial impact on the creative industries. RTE News reported that illegal streaming drains money away from companies investing in content.
Since March 2023, FACT and its partners have successfully closed almost 70 illegal streaming services in Ireland and disrupted tens of thousands of unlawful streams.
