SAN ANTONIO — A collision involving a crane truck and an 18-wheeler shut down eastbound lanes of Loop 1604 near Rocket Lane early Tuesday, disrupting traffic on San Antonio’s Far Northeast Side, according to local authorities.
The crash occurred around 3:45 a.m. On April 28, 2026, near the intersection of Loop 1604 and Rocket Lane, close to Randolph Air Force Base, the Converse Police Department reported. Preliminary investigations indicated that a tire detached from the crane truck, causing the driver to lose control and strike the 18-wheeler, which was stopped on the side of the road.
Injuries Reported, Lanes Remain Closed
Both drivers involved in the collision were transported to local hospitals for evaluation. The driver of the 18-wheeler sustained a non-life-threatening head injury, while the crane truck driver reported numbness on the right side of his body, according to police. No additional injuries were disclosed.
The 18-wheeler was carrying Snapple beverages, which crews began unloading around 6 a.m. To facilitate cleanup efforts. The eastbound lanes of Loop 1604 remained closed as of early Tuesday morning, with authorities warning that additional closures were expected later in the day as heavy equipment would be brought in to remove the crane truck from the scene.
TransGuide, the regional traffic management system, confirmed the closure and advised motorists to seek alternate routes to avoid delays. The timeline for reopening the lanes remained unclear.
Traffic Disruptions Expected to Continue
Local media outlets reported significant traffic backups in the area as commuters navigated detours. The crash site, located between Rocket Lane and Lower Seguin Road, is a heavily traveled corridor for morning commuters and commercial traffic.
Converse Police Department officials urged drivers to exercise caution and monitor local traffic updates for further developments. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
