On Wednesday morning, April 22, 2026, an 18-year-old woman attempted to take her own life by jumping from the Pont de Pierre in Bordeaux, Gironde, into the Garonne River.
A passerby who witnessed the incident raised the alarm, alerting a 20-year-old Gambian man who was homeless and in a precarious situation. Without hesitation, he dove into the cold, turbulent waters of the river to rescue the young woman who was in danger of drowning.
The woman was brought back to shore near the Pont Saint-Jean, where she was attended to by firefighters and an SMUR emergency medical team before being transported to Charles Perrens Hospital for further care.
The Gambian man, who also entered the river to perform the rescue, was examined by emergency services and taken to Saint-André Hospital in stable condition.
Police national officers were present at the scene throughout the operation, overseeing the rescue efforts and ensuring the safety of those involved.
Both individuals were reported to be in stable condition following their respective medical evaluations and treatment.
