[파이낸셜뉴스] A video of people rubbing garlic on their face to treat acne is going viral on TikTok. However, experts point out that it can cause skin irritation.

According to the New York Post, an American media outlet, on the 28th (local time), a video posted on the TikTok channel ‘xx24iv’ showing that rubbing garlic on acne is good for acne treatment recorded 2.6 million views. However, after seeing this, Ketaki Bateh, a dermatologist in London, England, warned, “If you apply raw garlic to acne, it can cause irritation and inflammation of the skin.”

He pointed out that “most acne treatments can be done with prescription medications, and you can’t get rid of acne instantly with garlic.” Emily English, a British nutritionist and founder of a nutritional supplement company, also emphasized that “eating garlic is better for skin health than applying it.”

In fact, eating garlic can have health benefits for your skin. However, it is better to eat it cooked.

This is because heating garlic increases the content of polyphenols and flavonoids, which are antioxidants that prevent aging.

Here, cooked garlic has antioxidant activity that is up to 50 times higher than raw garlic. There are research results showing that the polyphenol and flavonoid content is 7 times and 16 times higher, respectively. Polyphenol plays a role in changing active oxygen in the body into harmless substances, and flavonoid, also known as vitamin P, has an antioxidant effect in the body.

On the other hand, salty and sweet foods like processed foods are harmful to acne and skin health. Salt takes moisture from the collagen in the skin and dries it out. In addition, dry skin loses elasticity and easily forms fine wrinkles.

Also, sweet foods are not good either.

When sugar is consumed and blood sugar levels rise, active oxygen and advanced glycation end products accumulate in the body. This eventually leads to acne and accelerated skin aging. In addition, it denatures collagen, which is responsible for skin elasticity, causing skin aging.
