A tragic incident in Oregon has led to a voluntary recall of nearly 200,000 KidKraft “Farm to Table” toy kitchens. The recall, announced July 31st by the consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), comes after a 23-month-old child died in 2023 after becoming entangled on a hook within the toy kitchen. The child was crawling through an opening in the back of the kitchen when their clothing snagged on one of the accessory hooks, resulting in suffocation. This heartbreaking event underscores the potential dangers posed by seemingly harmless children’s toys and highlights the importance of vigilant safety measures.
What’s Being Recalled?
Backyard Kids, LLC, the manufacturer, is voluntarily recalling all KidKraft Farm to Table toy kitchens (model number 53411). While approximately 192,000 units where initially distributed, only around 400 are believed to have been sold to consumers. the toy kitchen, designed for children ages 3 and up, measures approximately 44 inches long and 43 inches high. The model number can be found on a label affixed to the product.
These kitchens were sold at major retailers including Walmart, amazon, and directly through the Kidkraft website.Despite the relatively low number of units believed to be in consumers’ homes, the CPSC is urging immediate action due to the severe risk the toy poses to young children.
The Safety Hazard: A Threat to Young Explorers
The CPSC has determined that the KidKraft Farm to Table toy kitchen presents a “risk of serious injuries or death” to young children. The primary concern lies with the hooks used to hang toy accessories. These hooks can easily snag children’s clothing if they climb on the counter or crawl through the opening at the back of the kitchen.
This is notably hazardous for toddlers and infants who are naturally curious and prone to exploring their surroundings. The design, while intended for older children, doesn’t adequately prevent accidental entanglement for younger, more mobile children who may have access to the toy.
What Should Consumers Do?
If you have a KidKraft Farm to Table toy kitchen, stop using it immediately. Contact Backyard Kids to receive free replacement hooks. The company is providing these replacements to address the hazard, even though a relatively small number of units were sold directly to consumers.
Backyard Kids can be reached for replacement hooks and further information. Kidkraft emphasizes that “safety is our priority” and encourages all consumers to participate in the recall.
This recall serves as a crucial reminder for parents and caregivers to regularly assess the safety of children’s toys and environments. Vigilance and proactive measures are essential to protecting young children from potential hazards.
