[세종=뉴스핌] Reporter Baek Seung-eun = Harmful substances and microorganisms were detected in 20 out of 30 pet supplies sold on overseas direct purchase sites such as AliExpress, Temu, and Shein.

The Korea Consumer Agency announced on the 26th that as a result of verifying the safety of pet supplies and essential oils sold on AliExpress, Temu, and Sheen, 37 out of 49 products were confirmed to not meet domestic safety standards.

Among 30 pet products, including ▲animal oral spray ▲animal shampoo ▲animal wet tissues, 20 products (66.7%) were found to contain hazardous substances and microorganisms exceeding domestic standards.

Among 10 oral sprays for animals, 6 (60.0%) products contained formaldehyde, which is prohibited for use, and benzoic acid (0.088–0.246%), which exceeded the domestic standard (0.06% or less). In addition, 6 (60.0%) products contained total aerobic microorganisms (430–110 million CFU/g) and total fungi (1.2–2.8 million CFU/g), which exceeded the domestic standard (total aerobic microorganisms 1,000 CFU/g or less, total fungi 100 CFU/g or less).

Eight out of ten (80.0%) animal shampoo products contained formaldehyde, which is prohibited for use, and a mixture of CMIT/MIT (0.0018–0.0033%) exceeding the domestic standard (0.0015% or less).

In addition, MIT, which is prohibited for use, was detected in 1 out of 10 (10.0%) animal wet tissue products, and formaldehyde (560 μg/g) and benzoic acid (0.114%), which exceeded the domestic standards (formaldehyde 20 μg/g or less, benzoic acid 0.06% or less), were detected in 2 (20.0%) products.

Among 19 essential oil products used for personal use such as massage or as air fresheners, CMIT and MIT, which are prohibited from being included in household chemical products, were detected in two products.

In addition, 17 products were found to contain allergens such as butylphenyl methylpropional (BMHCA), linalool, and limonene in amounts exceeding the labeling standards, but none of the products displayed these ingredients.

The Consumer Protection Agency and the Fair Trade Commission shared the results of the investigation with overseas platform operators and recommended blocking the sale of the harmful products. AliExpress, Temu, and Shein accepted the recommendation and completed the blocking of the sale of the harmful products.

The Consumer Agency said, “We plan to block the distribution of harmful products through continuous inspections of overseas direct purchase products in cooperation with the Fair Trade Commission.”
