Iranian Protests Enter 17th Day, Death Toll Mounts
Millions of Iranians are continuing protests against the Islamic Republic of Iran, entering their 17th day, and are appealing to Western nations, particularly the United States, for support.
Despite a near-total internet blackout and the deployment of foreign militias and live ammunition against protesters, demonstrations continue in cities including Isfahan and Tehran. protesters are demanding freedom and assistance from the West.
The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRAA) reports at least 2,000 people have been killed in the nationwide protests. According to HRAA, 1,847 protesters and 135 government-affiliated individuals have died in recent weeks as of January 15, 2026.
Juliana Taimoorazy, founder and president of the Iraqi Christian Relief council, stated protesters are urgently requesting international aid, saying, “Please come and help us. the next few hours are critical. Their eyes are on Israel. Their eyes are on America. They’re begging, they’re pleading with us to assist.”
Many protesters are specifically seeking assistance from former President Donald Trump. On Monday, Trump imposed a 25-percent tariff on nations trading with Iran, with further options under consideration.
He is scheduled to meet with advisors on Tuesday to discuss the next steps for the U.S., following a State Department warning urging all Americans in Iran to “leave now.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that diplomacy remains the president’s primary approach, adding that the public statements from the Iranian regime differ from private communications with the management.
