Ten years ago, on June 16, 2013, Uttarakhand was struck by a devastating natural disaster. Unprecedented monsoon rainfall,exceeding normal levels by 440%,triggered catastrophic floods and landslides. The Chorabari Lake near Kedarnath overflowed due to a cloudburst and glacial lake outburst flood, sending torrents of water and debris downstream.
The disaster resulted in over 6,000 fatalities, left more than 100,000 pilgrims and tourists stranded, and decimated infrastructure throughout the state. Operation Surya Hope, launched by the Indian Army with over 10,000 troops, and Operation Rahat, one of the Indian Air Force’s largest civilian rescue missions by air, evacuated nearly 20,000 people and delivered vital supplies.
Despite these efforts, the disaster highlighted meaningful gaps in preparedness and early warning systems. Dialog breakdowns and a lack of coordinated action hampered evacuation efforts, contributing to the high casualty count. The India Meteorological Department had issued alerts, but their impact was limited.

With numerous schools damaged or destroyed, SEEDS rebuilt 18 schools across Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts, utilizing earthquake-resilient, lightweight materials that served as safe spaces and community hubs. Disaster preparedness training was provided to over 2,000 students and residents.
