2024 NASCAR Playoff Controversies: Critique of the Current Format
NASCAR Playoff Format Controversies
Table of Contents
Since NASCAR introduced the Playoff format in 2004, it has sparked many controversies. The 2024 season ended with Joey Logano and Penske winning the championship despite an average finish of 17.1, the worst in the format’s history.
2024 Cook-Out 400 at Richmond Raceway
In the 2024 Cook-Out 400 at Richmond, Austin Dillon aimed for victory in overtime. He hit Logano’s car, sending him into the wall. Denny Hamlin took the lead, but then Dillon made contact with Hamlin, causing him to crash as well. Dillon won the race, but his win was controversial. Audio of his spotter saying “wreck him” about Hamlin angered fans. NASCAR allowed Dillon to keep the win, but it did not count for the Playoffs.
2020 Xfinity 500 at Martinsville
Kevin Harvick dominated the 2020 season, winning nine races. However, he did not make it to the Final Four. He finished 17th at Martinsville, leading to disbelief among fans and drivers. Harvick entered the race with a 42-point advantage. Yet, he was eliminated from title contention. Many felt it was unfair that his strong performance throughout the season did not secure him a place in the finals.
Kyle Busch and the 2019 NASCAR Playoffs
Kyle Busch won the 2019 NASCAR Cup Series Championship, but it was far from easy. He did not win in the first three playoff rounds and clinched his only Playoff victory in the final race. This season raised questions about the Playoff format. Busch had a strong regular season with several wins, but inconsistent finishes during the playoffs included a 37th place at Charlotte Roval. Many believe the format fails to reward consistent drivers, leading to calls for change after the 2024 season.
