2024 World Athletics Awards: Finalists for Photograph of the Year Revealed

The finalists for the Photograph of the Year award have been announced ahead of the World Athletics Awards 2024. A panel of judges reviewed 114 images submitted by photographers from 46 countries. They narrowed the entries to 11 images and then selected three finalists.

These images will be featured in a digital exhibition on the World Athletics website, set to launch later this month. The winning photograph will be revealed on World Athletics’ platforms during the awards ceremony.

The Finalists

1. Mattia Ozbot

   • Mondo Duplantis in pole vault action at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at the Stade de France.
     

2. Michael Steele

   • Tigist Assefa of Ethiopia and Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands collide during the women’s marathon at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at Esplanade des Invalides.
     
3. Anna Szilagyi
   • Noah Lyles of USA celebrates with his gold medal during the medal ceremony for the men’s 100m at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games at the Stade de France.

• Mattia Ozbot (ITA)

  Freelance photographer based in Milan. Ozbot specializes in sports photography and has covered major international sports events.

• Michael Steele (GBR)

  Professional sports photographer since 1986. He has worked for Getty Images since 1999 and covers various sports, including athletics.

• Anna Szilagyi (HUN)

  Staff photographer for the European Pressphoto Agency since 2023. Previously, she worked for the Associated Press in Budapest.
