Revolutionizing the Competition Format
The UEFA Women’s Champions League is set for a notable overhaul beginning with the 2025/26 season. Moving away from the conventional group stage format, the competition will introduce an 18-team league phase where all qualified clubs will compete against each other. this change, announced by UEFA, aims to increase the quality and competitiveness of the tournament.
Each team will face six different opponents, playing three matches at home and three away. This expanded league phase will provide more opportunities for top teams to test themselves against each other and build momentum.
Path to the Knockout Stages
The top four teams in the league phase will automatically advance to the quarter-finals. Teams finishing in positions five through twelve will then compete in a two-legged play-off to determine the remaining quarter-finalists. The bottom six teams (places 13-18) will be eliminated from the competition.
Once the quarter-finals are set, the competition will revert to the familiar two-legged tie format used in previous seasons, continuing all the way through to the final.
Confirmed and Aspiring Teams
nine teams have already secured their places in the league phase: Arsenal, Lyon, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg, Barcelona, Chelsea, benfica, and Juventus.
the remaining nine spots will be filled by teams emerging victorious from the third qualifying rounds. Notable clubs vying for a place in the league include Manchester United, Real Madrid, Paris FC,and eintracht Frankfurt.
