Hopes were high for the American contingent entering the 2025 French Open after a strong clay-court season and recent major successes.
Few could have predicted the extent of their success in Paris. Following madison Keys’ three-set victory over Sofia Kenin, eight Americans advanced to the second week at Roland Garros.
This marks the most Americans in the round of 16 in 40 years.
With five women and three men still in contention, this is also a historic run for the men. The last time this many reached this stage was in 1995,before any of the current players were born. The players are aware of the significance of this moment.
“I think that all the Americans are realy excited,” Ben Shelton said after his victory. “We all always know that this is a tournament that historically we don’t do well in, a surface we historically struggle on. It woudl mean a lot, you know, how much respect you would gain for doing well here.”
Frances Tiafoe added, “Guys are just hungry, man. just believe it. ThatS kind of all it is indeed.”
Serena Williams, in 2015, was the last American to win the French Open singles title. Andre agassi was the last man to do so in 1999. The question is,can one of these players make history next weekend in Paris? Here’s a look at the Americans still in the draw and their paths to this point.

up next: No. 20 Ekaterina Alexandrova
Gauff entered the French Open with considerable momentum, perhaps second only to Carlos Alcaraz. the 21-year-old reached the finals in Madrid and Rome, defeating Iga Swiatek, Mirra Andreeva (twice), and Zheng Qinwen, showcasing her best tennis on clay.
she was a pre-tournament favorite, and her performance in Paris has validated that.
Gauff, a 2022 Roland Garros finalist, cruised thru her first two matches. while Bouzkova raised her level in their round-of-32 match,Gauff ultimately prevailed 6-1,7-6 (3),hitting 22 winners and winning five of eight net points in the second set.

“I think, just for long-term-wise, and obviously mentally, it’s a lot better to finish that in two sets,” Gauff said after the match. “Yeah,it gives me a little more confidence in finding ways to win maybe when playing opponents like that and try not to kind of self-destruct.”
Gauff will face Alexandrova on Monday, holding a 3-1 career record against her. A victory would set up a potential all-American quarterfinal against the winner of Keys versus Hailey Baptiste, with a chance to reach her second consecutive French Open semifinal.
Jessica Pegula
Players she has beaten so far: anca Todoni, Ann Li, Marketa Vondrousova
Up next: Lois Boisson
After missing the 2024 European clay season due to injury, Pegula returned strong by winning the title on green clay in charleston in April.Despite inconsistent results in her subsequent events, she appears to be in top form in Paris.
The 31-year-old, who reached her first major final at the US Open last season, won her first two rounds without dropping a set.She then rallied to defeat Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion and 2019 French Open finalist. After failing to secure a break point in the first set, Pegula broke Vondrousova three times in the second and maintained control.

Pegula faces a favorable fourth-round matchup against Boisson, a French wild card ranked No. 361 making her major main draw debut. Pegula mentioned that she has never played a French player at Roland Garros but is looking forward to the experience.
“Obviously [she is] going to have some crazy support,” Pegula said. “I’m pretty good at kind of zoning out. I have played in some pretty rowdy crowds. I think it will be fun. It will be cool to be a part of that. Even though they’re not for me, it will still be fun. They’re going to be going crazy.”
A victory over Boisson would secure Pegula’s second French Open quarterfinal appearance, her first since 2022. It would also be her seventh major quarterfinal, giving her a chance to reach her second Grand Slam semifinal.
No. 7 Madison Keys
Players she has beaten so far: Daria Saville, Katie Boulter, No. 31 Sofia Kenin
Up next: Hailey Baptiste
it’s been a dominant and resurgent year for the 30-year-old Keys. After accepting that she might not win a major, keys claimed the Australian Open title in January.
Since that victory, Keys has returned to the top 10 and reached the semifinals at Indian Wells and the quarterfinals in Madrid.
At the French Open, she has reached the fourth round for the first time since 2022, saving three match points in her 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over Kenin.
baptiste stands between her and her first quarterfinal at Roland Garros as 2019. Keys won their only prior meeting on green clay in Charleston in 2023,6-1,6-2.
Keys acknowledged the challenge ahead when speaking to the media after her win over Kenin, expressing her admiration for Baptiste.
“I think Hailey is a great player,” Keys said. “… I’m not surprised.I have seen her growing up. I think she’s had incredible talent the entire time. So, really happy for her to see all of the success that she’s having, kind of putting that all together and climbing up the rankings.
“All that said, I think it’s going to be a really tough match. She’s very talented. She has a lot of tangibles, and she knows how to kind of mix up paces, but can also, all of a sudden, absolutely crack the ball. going to be a really tough match, but looking forward to it.”
Hailey Baptiste
Players she has beaten so far: No. 23 Beatriz Haddad Maia, Nao Hibino, Jessica Bouzas Maneiro
Up next: No. 7 Madison Keys
While the other remaining Americans are top-20 players with major semifinal appearances, the 23-year-old Baptiste is experiencing a career breakthrough in Paris.
Before the French Open, Baptiste had never advanced past the second round at a Grand slam and had only made the main draw twice in the past three years.
