IPO Market Awaits Stronger Second Half After Slow Start to 2025
Updated June 03, 2025
Despite a few high-profile debuts, initial public offering activity has remained sluggish thru the first five months of 2025. The IPO market, after a couple of slow years, saw adtech platform MNTN and digital physical therapy company Hinge Health recently make their public debuts.
MNTN went public on may 21 at $16 a share, valuing the company at $1.2 billion. Hinge Health debuted the following day, priced at $32 per share, giving it a $2.6 billion valuation. Both companies experienced significant first-day gains, with MNTN shares jumping 65% and Hinge health up 17%.
The buzz continued with stablecoin issuer Circle announcing plans for an IPO, aiming to raise about $624 million at a $5.65 billion valuation. Circle intends to sell 24 million shares, priced between $24 and $26 each. This proclamation comes amid increased attention on stablecoins, with reports suggesting Meta is exploring potential partnerships to offer crypto support.
Though, May saw only 10 companies announce IPO plans, the fewest as December 2024, which had nine. The decision to go public in 2025 has been challenging, with macroeconomic uncertainty and high interest rates causing delays. Companies like Chime Financial, Circle, Hinge Health, and Stubhub have either debuted or announced plans after being on the sidelines. Klarna has further delayed its IPO to later in the year.
Beyond market volatility and interest rates, the performance of recent IPOs may be deterring companies. In 2024, companies that went public returned 8% on average, underperforming major indexes. The availability of private capital, with startups like Stripe, OpenAI, and SpaceX raising considerable funds, may also reduce the urgency to go public.
Optimism remains for new listings, driven by progress in AI and crypto. If markets stabilize and the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates, as expected, a stronger IPO market may emerge in the second half of the year. A successful, high-profile IPO could revitalize the market.
What’s next
The IPO market is hoping that a major initial public offering could jump-start activity. The potential for interest rate cuts and continued progress in technology sectors like AI and cryptocurrency are key factors to watch for a potential rebound in IPO filings and overall IPO market performance.
