Can the Pacers Extend the NBA Finals Against the Thunder?
Updated June 18, 2025
The Oklahoma City Thunder are one win away from capturing the NBA championship, holding a 3-2 lead over the Indiana Pacers in the 2025 NBA Finals. After the thunder’s dominant Game 5 performance, the Pacers face an uphill battle as they head back to Indianapolis for Game 6.
A major concern for Indiana is the health of star guard Tyrese Haliburton. Haliburton, dealing with a strained right calf, had a playoff career-low four points in Game 5. An MRI on Tuesday will determine the extent of the injury and his availability for Thursday’s pivotal matchup. The Pacers’ NBA Finals hopes hinge on Haliburton’s ability to contribute effectively.
Oklahoma City’s success has been fueled by the stellar play of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander,who had 31 points in Game 5,and Jalen Williams, who had 40.However, the Thunder’s deep bench has also been a meaningful factor, providing crucial scoring punch throughout the series.
Tim macmahon noted the importance of Haliburton’s health, stating, “It’s hard to see the Pacers generating a lot of points against the league’s best defence without a healthy haliburton.” MacMahon added that Indiana is a different team when Haliburton is in attack mode.
Jamal Collier echoed this sentiment: “If he can’t be significantly more effective than he was in game 5, the Pacers’ path to victory becomes extremely difficult.”
Chris Herring suggested that if Haliburton is limited, coach rick Carlisle might consider giving T.J. McConnell more playing time. Herring said it’s hard to see Indiana squeezing out two more victories without Haliburton being right physically.
tim bontemps succinctly stated the Pacers’ dire situation: “Indiana’s season ends with one more loss, and the Pacers’ engine seems like he’ll be a good deal less than 100 percent. It doesn’t get more concerning than that.”
Zach Kram pointed out that Haliburton’s struggles in Game 5 weren’t just due to a shooting slump but a calf injury that hampered his movement.
Another key factor for the Pacers is the performance of Myles Turner. Bontemps noted that Turner’s numbers have declined in this series, including going 5-for-22 from 3-point range. Indiana desperately needs Turner to score 20-plus points and be a threat from beyond the arc.
What’s next
Game 6 is Thursday in Indianapolis. if the Pacers can overcome Haliburton’s injury and get strong performances from Turner and their role players, they could force a decisive Game 7. However, if Oklahoma City’s bench continues to produce and Haliburton remains limited, the Thunder are poised to win their first NBA championship.
