As the Stanley Cup Final unfolds, the NHL continues to announce its annual awards. Cale Makar of the Colorado Avalanche has been awarded the Norris Trophy, recognizing the league’s best defenseman. Lane Hutson of the Montreal canadiens claimed the calder Trophy, given to the NHL’s top rookie.
Makar received 176 first-place votes out of 191, surpassing Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets adn Quinn Hughes of the Vancouver Canucks for the Norris Trophy.Hutson tallied 165 first-place votes, besting Calgary Flames goaltender Dustin Wolf and San Jose Sharks forward Macklin Celebrini for the Calder.
Makar is the first defenseman to score 30 goals in a season as Mike Green in 2008-09. he also joins Paul coffey and Al MacInnis as the only defensemen to record back-to-back 90-point seasons. His 30 goals set a franchise record for goals by a defenseman in a single season for the Avalanche/Quebec Nordiques.
Hutson is just the fourth defenseman in the modern era (since 1943-44) to lead all rookies in points with 66. He joins Bobby Orr, Brian leetch, and Quinn Hughes as the only defensemen to achieve this feat. His 60 assists tied Larry Murphy for the most assists by a rookie defenseman in NHL history.
