Cameron Champ Surges, McIlroy Falters at Canadian Open
Updated June 7, 2025
Cameron Champ, the ninth alternate, grabbed the led at the RBC Canadian Open, carding a 66 on Friday to reach 12-under. Simultaneously occurring, Rory McIlroy’s struggles continued, leading to a missed cut. Champ’s strong performance puts him two strokes ahead of Andrew Putnam at TPC Toronto.
McIlroy’s troubles culminated in a second-round 78, plummeting him to 149th place at 9-over. A quadruple bogey on the par-4 5th hole sealed his fate. His struggles with his driver also persisted, hitting only four of 14 fairways.
Putnam’s impressive 62 propelled him into contention. Champ,a three-time PGA Tour winner, last won in 2021 and expressed pride in his ability to score despite not playing his best.
“I would just say I’m honestly just proud of myself and how I played,” Champ said. “Yesterday,I felt like was pretty flawless; today,I didn’t hit it my best but just kind of stuck with our game plan, picked good targets, picked the right clubs for the most part, left myself in spots to get it up and down if I did miss shots. it was nice to see that to keep the round going even though I didn’t feel like I was hitting it my best.”
Champ’s driving accuracy and putting have been key to his success. He leads the field in strokes gained off the tee and is eighth in strokes gained putting.
